Developing your own theories of practice requires patience and perseverance. It does not develop instantly before your eyes, as film develops in a Polaroid camera. It evolves over time, through determined effort. It involves the development of a level of knowledge, skill, attitude, and autonomy that is necessary to give you the confidence and the competence to embrace a self-directed pedagogy. Above all, it involves the ability to critically engage your own beliefs and values, understandings and assumptions, and change them if necessary.

Course Description
As the number of English language learners in the U.S. increases rapidly, there is an urgent need to understand the academic needs of ethnolinguistically diverse student population. Today, the reality of globalization and the immigration requires all pre-service and in-service teachers to become knowledgeable and culturally-sensitive about the affective ways to help students’ improve their literacy skills both in English and in their home languages. In this context, it is crucial that all teachers are equipped with the necessary tools to create optimal learning environments for ethnolinguistically diverse students, and move beyond “one-size fits all” approaches which, most of the time, do not take into consideration the socio-cultural and linguistic differences of diverse student population. With this in mind, this course aims to help pre-service teachers advance their knowledge on how to develop pedagogical practices that accommodate academic and sociocultural needs of the 21st century’s diverse classroom contexts. Drawing on the principles of postmethod pedagogy and socioculturally oriented language education, the primary goal of this course is to prepare pre-service teachers to develop context-specific and culturally appropriate pedagogical spaces and artifacts for diverse student population.
Course Objectives
1. raise pre-service teachers’ awareness on the needs of different types of English language learners (e.g. ESL, EFL, 1.5 generation) in the U.S. school systems;
2. move away from the traditional view of “teacher as knowledge provider” to “teacher as facilitators” and “transformative practitioners”;
3. examine current issues related to language, identity, and culture in relation to ESL methods and material development;
4. help pre-service teachers learn how to maximize language learning opportunities for diverse student population;
5. learn how to facilitate negotiated interaction, contextualize linguistic input, integrate language skills, and raise cultural consciousness in classroom.
